Rural Mentorship

The Importance of Mentorship:

  1. Most current RFDs, myself included, would not be where we are without quality mentors.

  2. Mentors provide both direction and support, which is critical on the long journey to becoming a RFD.

  3. In medicine, our best teachers are our patients. I would argue that mentors come next.

  4. Mentors are not just clinical faculty, they can be from all walks of life (mine include my parents, a fisheries biologist, fly fishing guru and rancher in addition to clinical mentors).

  5. Ultimately, mentorship is founded on building relationships and the passing of knowledge from people with experience to those desiring it

RFDs Commitment To Mentorship: â€‹â€‹â€‹

  1. RFD will help you identify mentors depending on your location, interests and needs

  2. Mentors will be honored monthly for their service (RFD Mentor Of The Month)

  3. Our blog will periodically feature mentor and mentee skills to help promote quality mentorship relationships.

My original RFD mentor Dr. Andrew Jones the day I learned of my acceptance into UWSOM. Still one of the best days of my life. The ensuing bear hug (for which he was famous for) nearly broke a rib.
